As Companionship providers we play a vital role in improving the quality of life of the individual we support, who may feel lonely or need help with daily tasks. At Befriending Betty, it's all about supporting independence and ensuring our clients do not feel alone. We consider ourselves trusted friends who provide a reassuring presence and brighten days.
This blog provides an insight into our role as companionship providers, highlighting the meaningful moments and reasons why we love what we do.
The individuals we care for all have differing needs and our service is adapted daily to reflect these needs, also taking into account our clients routines. During a typical day, we see both regular clients and clients who use us on an ad hoc basis. We also provide holiday cover and respite visits so that loved ones can take a well deserved break.
Morning Routine: Setting the Tone for the Day
The day often starts early. After breakfast, we review our schedule which can involve multiple visits to different clients in a day. Although we make a number of visits in any given day, we always ensure that we have spare time between each visit to ensure those we support feel well cared for and are happy with our service.
First Client Visit: A Gentle Start to the Day
The first visit of the day is to a client who we check in on each morning. This visit is all about creating a calm and reassuring start. We arrive with a warm greeting, put the kettle on, and prepare a simple breakfast while enjoying a lovely morning chat. It’s a gentle check-in — making sure the client feels well, reviewing any plans for the day, reminding them to take their medication and ensure everything is comfortably arranged. Once we have checked our client is ok, we take their lovely dog out for a walk. These small routines help the day begin feeling organised, supported, and unhurried.
Second Client Visit: A Walk in the Countryside
Our second visit is to a client who enjoys morning walks. We ensure we match our client’s pace and provide a steady arm for support. Our clients' safety and comfort are always paramount.
During the walk, we talk about our clients family as they love to talk about their children and grandchildren and enjoy reminiscing about times gone by. Research from studies indicate that social interaction, like these conversations, can improve mental engagement and emotional health significantly. These conversations also build a bond that is both meaningful and rewarding.
Gentle walking has been shown to support joint flexibility, muscle strength, balance, and mobility, which all help maintain independence and reduce the risk of falls. Regular walking also boosts mental wellbeing by reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, and enhancing mood.
Third Client Visit: Lunch & Meal Preparation
Our third visit of the day is to a client who requires help with meal preparation and we typically prepare meals and put them out in the fridge for the next couple of days before our next visit. Other tasks are performed during the visit which vary from visit to visit as required. On this particular day we helped our client to organise some paperwork and helped them to do some paper shredding.
Fourth Client - Regular trips out
Our fourth visit is to a client who we take to their weekly trip to the hairdressers. A visit to the hairdressers for a cut and blow dry is about much more than appearance — it’s a chance to feel refreshed, confident, and connected. Getting out of the house provides gentle stimulation, a change of scenery, and valuable social interaction, all of which support emotional wellbeing.
For older adults, familiar community outings can help maintain routine, boost mood, and encourage conversation. The simple act of having hair washed and styled can lift self-esteem, restore a sense of normality, and bring back treasured memories of regular salon visits. It’s a small outing that often leaves someone standing a little taller, smiling a little brighter, and feeling more like themselves again. During the appointment, we pop to the local shop to pick up any shopping they need.
When we arrive back to the client's house we make them a cup of tea and sit with them and have a chat to make sure they are settled before we leave.
Fifth Client - Afternoon Visits: Variety and Adaptability
Afternoons often include our gardening service and home help service. Our afternoons are often spent doing gardening or housework. On this particular day, we visited a client and mowed their lawns, cut the edges and did some weeding. We use a cordless battery operated lawn mower which is not only environmentally friendly but easy for our clients as we don't need to use any electricity.
Our home help service includes assistance with any household jobs from housework and laundry, through to helping to reorganise cupboards and sorting out and filing paperwork.
We adapt our approach based on the clients' preferences. This flexibility ensures that each visit feels personal and tailored to the individual. For instance, a gardening session can be used to explore our clients love of plants and the outdoors,
Evening Telephone Call
Our last call of the day is a welfare check, which is performed over the telephone. This involves a telephone conversation with our client where we check all is well and have a conversation about our day with a contingency plan in place if they fail to answer the phone. This provides our client with confidence that someone is always checking in with them and they look forward to our daily call.
Evening Wind Down: Reflecting on the Day
As the day wraps up, we reflect on the experiences shared with each client. This reflection fosters personal growth and highlights the impact of our work.
During our visits we also observe changes in our client’s mood or health, which can be crucial indicators of overall well-being and note anything that needs to be addressed.
The Heart of Companionship
A day in the life of a companionship provider is filled with meaningful moments. Each interaction not only contributes to the well-being of clients but also reinforces the profound importance of companionship.
Through engaging activities and heartfelt conversations, companionship providers play a crucial role in enhancing the lives of those they serve. Their work goes beyond a job; it is a commitment to fostering connections that enrich the human experience.
In a world where loneliness often overshadows joy, companionship providers illuminate the path to connection and care, showing all of us the power of friendship and support.
At Befriending Betty, we love it when our clients faces brighten up when we arrive and know that our clients look forward to our visits. There really is nothing more rewarding than time spent helping our lovely clients and their families.
